What Is Memory Reconsolidation — and Does It Explain Trauma Therapy?
Memory reconsolidation refers to the possibility that an established memory can become temporarily modifiable after it is reactivated. The idea has enormous implications for trauma therapy—but it is also frequently overstated. ART, EMDR, imagery rescripting, and other trauma treatments may create conditions for memory updating, but we cannot simply assume that every therapeutic change is proof that reconsolidation occurred.
