You will often hear that EMDR or bilateral stimulation “rewires the brain.” In the broadest sense, all learning changes brain function. But that does not mean eye movements uniquely rewire a trauma circuit. Research suggests psychotherapy can alter activity across networks involved in memory, attention, emotion, and threat, while the specific neural mechanism of bilateral stimulation remains unsettled.
